LABOR DAY REGATTA

September 2, 2002

Racing got under way at about 2:30pm after the pot-luck / cookout. The wind picked up from the South at about 10 knots, with gusts to 12 or so. It was overcast and on the cool side, a harbinger of the Fall. By the third race, the wind dropped under 10 knots (note the increased elapsed times) with occasional light misting.

The Albacore (Beth Dingman) won all three races, with the Rhodes following close behind. The Albacore had very good starts off the line, which in the Race Committee's opinion, was the decisive factor that contributed to their victory. They also had great boat speed and didn't make any mistakes, which kept them from being victimized by their low handicap.

The closest race by far was in second race between the Rhodes and the Day Sailor, which was nipping close on the heels of the Rhodes. In the end, the Rhodes squeeked past the Day Sailor by one one hundreth of a minute (about half a second) according to the corrected time, even though the Rhodes finished nearly 3 minutes ahead of the Day Sailor. Sharp wins…by a nose!

In Race 3, the Javelin rallied to finish ahead of the Day Sailor, both in terms of elapsed time and corrected time - way to go, guys! As you both know by now, the Javelin is a bit of a dog, especially considering the fact that the main is smaller than the standard one used for establishing your 111.4 Portsmouth handicap ("Now they tell us!!!"). In terms of over all regatta points, the Javelin and the Day Sailor were a single point apart, making it a very close regatta for third place.

A number of people helped to make the regatta a success. Thanks to Sally Sharp for setting the course and organizing a lot of the details necessary for a fun regatta (including prizes!). Thanks also to Betty-Ann Heistad, who runs the best grill anywhere! José Torres was a big help in the committee boat, managing the anchor, helping to square the starting line, and picking up marks at the end of the regatta. Bill did the really hard part - he blew the whistle at the starts (most people don't realize how much strength it takes to do that).

A technical note on handicap scoring: Elapsed times were converted to decimal times and divided by the handicap. Corrected times were left in decimal format.
